In July of 2008, Ethan Tkalec, son of John and Gelse Tkalec, was diagnosed with Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN).  This rare terminal disorder progressively kills every nerve cell in the body, first impacting walking.  It eventually renders its victims quadriplegics, with feeding tubes and ventilators to assist with breathing.  Can you imagine having a child that eventually will no longer be capable of running, skipping, coloring, singing, walking or eating independently.  At this time there is no medical treatment or cure at this time.

 

Ethan’s family has partnered with Hannah’s Hope Fund for GAN (HHF), a 501c3 Public Charity established by Lori and Matt Sames when their daughter Hannah, was diagnosed with GAN in 2008.   Over $600,000 has been raised since April 2008.  The goal is to raise another $3m-$5millon in order to conduct a human clinical trail in 2011. The Sunshine Lady Foundation, founded by Warren Buffet’s sister, Doris Buffet, has agreed to give Hannah’s Hope Fund a $500,000 grant.  HHF needs to raise $55k between August 15, 2009-February 15, 2010 and it will be matched with $500k, thus “Hope for a Millon”.

I have been asked by Ethan’s family to organize a fund raiser for him within the Slovenian community.  The Slovenian Cultural Center has graciously offered the use of the Banquet Hall, free of charge, for a luncheon on Sunday, January 31, 2010.  In addition to the luncheon there will be entertainment, a bake sale and a 50/50 Cash Raffle.

 

I am appealing to the all Slovenian businessmen/women and organizations to help sponsor this event.  My goal is to raise enough sponsorship to underwrite the cost of the luncheon.    Your tax deductible donation will directly benefit HHF and thanks to Ms. Buffet, your contribution will be doubled.
